It is with sadness that Proms acknowledges the passing of Gareth Richards who was originally scheduled to appear at Comedy night. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Gareth's friends and family at this difficult time.
Arthur Smith was one of many stand-up performers on the alternative comedy scene in the 1980s, and still performs today in much the same manner. He has regularly attended the Edinburgh Fringe comedy festival since 1977, and still comperes the long-running Hackney Empire New Act of the Year competition final.
In addition to stand-up comedy, Arthur Smith has performed musical comedy shows such as Arthur Smith Sings Leonard Cohen (later broadcast on Radio 4). He is also a radio presenter on such BBC Radio 4 programmes as Excess Baggage and Loose Ends, and appears on television comedy panel games.
Thenjiwe is one of the most highly recognised and popular South African stand up comedians on the road today. The lawyer turned comedian has performed to audiences around the world including Vietnam, Thailand, The Philippines and cities in Australia, Europe, North America and Africa. She is the Queen of African Comedy. She won the King Gong Comedy award at the Comedy Store and The Black Out at Up The Creek. She recently did her one hour show at the Leicester Square Theatre in London where she received a standing ovation. She has a combined social media following of over a million and in 2022 was awarded an honorary Doctorate degree for her community services.
Winner of the Outstanding Achievement Award 2018, Otiz Cannelloni combines the illusion of magic and the wit of stand up to produce a hybrid comic creation. With a mind more suited to testing crash helmets, his performance fluctuates between sheer genius and downright stupidity. Just when you suspect he doesn’t have a clue, Cannelloni removes all doubt.
