2025 Fantastic Fanfares
Compose a Fanfare!
Our Fantastic Fanfares composing competition has now entered its 8th year. It's for young people aged 7-18. We will divide entries by age:
-
Ages 7 to 11
-
Ages 11 to 14
-
Ages 15 to18
Primary pupils will be encouraged to ask for guidance and support from their teachers. Over the 8 years we have had a variety of winning styles and fabulous entries. All of the entrants get feedback from the judges to ensure they have something positive to take away from the experience.
Entries can be scored for either conventional instruments or electronic production. Please see YouTube links and further details below.
We are delighted and very grateful that the competition will again be supported by Dorico composing software.
This support will include:
● A Dorico Pro licence for the winner of the senior competition(s)
● A Dorico Elements licence for the first 25 entrants
Entrants may use any software (or none at all) but the prizes offer enthusiastic composers an opportunity to deepen and enhance their knowledge and skills.
Details of the competition have been sent to schools in Northwest London and nearby, but entries are very welcome from young people anywhere, so please share with any schools or young people who may be interested. Proms will help the winner/s with the final recording. The fanfares will be judged by Proms at St Jude’s and professional musicians, and we hope that the winning fanfare/s will be played during Proms 2025.
Closing date 28 March 2025 - Ages 7 to 11
Closing date 31 January 2025 - Ages 11 to 14, 15 to 18

Proms at St Jude’s and DaCapo produced a 20 minute video and printable resource pack to support the Fanfare composition. This has been well received by secondary school music departments.
Both are available free to secondary music teachers and can be found on our Resources page.
In 2024, the winners were:
Leo Sellis and Isabella Paulmichi
In previous years winners have come from a range of local schools, including Fortismere, Mill Hill County High School, Dame Alice Owens with entries coming from across London and beyond. Winning composers have also been invited onto the judging panel in the following year.
