Blue badge guide Tina Gwynne-Evans will lead this tour through the City of London exploring the deep and lasting contributions philanthropists have made and their impact on a wide range of social issues, from education, prison reform, health and housing to the arts.

Simon Henderson, Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust Chief Executive, and Lauren March, Assistant Estate Manager, will explore the Trust-managed green environment of the Suburb, as an essential and irreplaceable component of this unique place. They will bring fresh perspectives to public spaces such as Central Square, as well as visiting the hidden green corners of the Suburb, its twitters and allotments.

Described by Pevsner as "most nearly perfect", Hampstead Garden Suburb owes much to the architects who planned its layout and housing. James Phillips, Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust Assistant Architectural Adviser, will look at some different architectural approaches to housing on the Suburb before and after WW1, in particular blocks of flats and the new ways of living that these offered.

The peak of the "Votes for Women" campaign coincided with the Suburb's earliest days and there were residents of all shades of opinion. Kate Webster, Heritage Walks Coordinator, uncovers suffragists and suffragettes, as well as talked of imprisonment, arson and more, featuring feisty women of the Suburb.

A gentle walk led by Tamara Rabin, English Heritage volunteer guide, who is passionate about Kenwood. We will examine Humphrey Repton's influence on the acclaimed landscape, as well as looking at some of the paintings inside the house.

The Suburb was inevitably affected by the events of both World Wars. Paul Capewell, the Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust's Information & Communications Assistant, will lead a tour of the Artisans' Quarter talking about the impact of the war.

Prior to founding Hampstead Garden Suburb, Henrietta Barnett and husband Canon Samuel Barnett were active in one of London's most impoverished areas. Kate Webster, Heritage Walks Coordinator, explores the Barnetts' work in the East End from the 1880s, including visits to Toynbee Hall and Whitechapel Art Gallery.

Led by accredited guide and lecturer Lester Hillman, we will uncover comedy's historic links in the Suburb. The walk features colourful characters from Joseph Grimaldi to giants from living memory, and ranges across a wealth of media - music, film, radio, TV, drama, events, landscape, cartoons and literature.

Ian will lead us through the streets of the city, tracing Shakespeare's rise from obscurity to superstar, visiting places where he lived and worked, whilst sharing stories of his life and times.

The Alleys and Lanes of Hampstead

Meet at Heath Street, Hampstead in courtyard outside Wagamama, NW3 1EN

Marilyn Greene, professional guide and former curator of Hampstead Museum will lead us through the attractive and intricate network of alleys and lanes in the heart of old Hampstead and discover how the village developed from a fashionable spa in the 18th century to a thriving village with social amenities in the 19th century.

Please note this walk involves steep roads and steps.
