Lions! Swans! Donkeys! Hens and Roosters! Elephants! Kangaroos! The Carnival of the Animals is a comedic musical suite, comprised of four short movements, which was written for a bit of light relief after Saint-Saëns returned from a fairly disastrous concert tour. It is probably the work that he is best remembered for, serving as an inspiration for the score to the Harry Potter film franchise. Rimsky-Korsakov’s orchestral interlude musically evokes the seemingly chaotic bumblebee’s flying pattern.
Noted children’s author James Mayhew will be painting throughout the concert.
